Short answer: if your sprinklers are weak and misty in the evening but fine in the morning, it is usually pressure on the street side, because neighbours are watering at the same time. If it is weak all day, look at a partly closed valve, a clogged filter, a leak or a failing backflow device. Our minimum service call is $95.
Why evenings are different
Georgia lets homeowners on public water water in the late afternoon and evening, and many do at once. When a whole street runs sprinklers, showers and dishwashers at the same hour, the pressure at your meter drops. Your system is not broken; the supply is thin. Morning, when fewer people use water, often shows the pressure your system was designed for.
If the weakness is the same at all hours, the supply is not the cause, and something on your side of the meter is.
What to check, in order
- Compare times. Run a zone in the early morning and again in the evening. A big difference points to street demand.
- Check the main shutoff. A valve that is only partly open chokes the whole system.
- Check the backflow preventer. Test cocks and handles should be in the right position.
- Look at each head. A clogged nozzle makes a weak pattern; a missing nozzle makes a geyser and drops pressure for the rest of the zone.
- Look for soggy spots. A broken line leaks pressure into the ground.
- Check filters, where your system has one.
- Run one zone at a time. A zone with too many heads can run short.
What the symptom points to
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Weak at night, fine in the morning | Street demand |
| Weak everywhere, all day | Partly closed valve or failing backflow device |
| One zone weak | Broken head, leak or clogged nozzles |
| Mist instead of spray | Pressure too high on a damaged nozzle, or very low pressure |
| Spray reaches half the distance | Low supply, clogged filter or leak |
| Pressure drops when a second zone runs | Two zones opening at once, or a valve stuck open |
How to work around street demand
You cannot change the street, but you can change when and how your system runs. Georgia’s rule allows watering between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m., so an early-morning schedule is allowed and is often the best. Spread long runs across the window, set zones one after another, and avoid starting several at the same time. A smart controller from $575 makes it simple. A good schedule also uses less water, which matters when the rest of the street is competing for it.
What a pro looks at
We test pressure at the system, not just the heads. We open the main, check the backflow, run each zone, and trace a leak if there is one. Backflow repair and install starts from $800, and that price does not include testing or certification. A valve replacement is $275–$1,200, and a buried valve can be located from $185. Many pressure problems end with something cheaper, such as a clogged nozzle or a half-closed valve, so we start with the simple things.
What is fair DIY
Checking the main valve, running a zone in the morning and evening, and cleaning a nozzle are fine. Do not take a backflow assembly apart unless you know what it does. It protects your drinking water.
A note on well and meter differences
Not every home is on the same supply. A home on a private well has its own pump and tank, and low pressure there points at the pump, the tank or a filter, not the street. A home on a public system may share a line with many neighbours. If you are unsure which applies, check your water bill. Either way, compare morning and evening runs first. That one test saves many a service call, and it tells us where to start.
When to call us
Call when pressure is low at every hour, when one zone stays weak, or when you see wet ground with no rain. We offer same-day service, answer day and night, and are family-owned, licensed and insured. See sprinkler repair and our irrigation overview.
FAQ
Why is my sprinkler pressure low in the evening? Many neighbours water at the same time, which lowers pressure on the street.
Could a leak cause low pressure? Yes. A broken line or head wastes pressure into the ground.
Does a smart controller fix low pressure? It cannot fix supply, but it can spread run times to avoid peak hours.
What does a sprinkler diagnosis cost? Our minimum service call is $95. Repairs are quoted before we start.
